전시소개
스페이스 윌링앤딜링에서는 2022년 10월 19일부터 11월 7일까지 장성은 개인전 <to my birthday>를 개최한다. 사진 매체를 다루어 온 장성은 작가는 눈에 보이지 않는 개인의 감정에 대한 시각적 구현에 대해 꾸준히 표현해 왔다. 더불어 물질적 예술품을 대체할 수 있는 온라인이라는 공간과 매체에 대한 관심을 지속해왔다. 한국문화예술위원회 기술융합지원사업 선정 프로젝트인 이번 전시는 현실과 가상의 전시를 동시에 진행함으로써 대면할 수 없는 물질성과 대면 할 수 있는 물질성에 대한 장성은 작가의 시선을 보여준다. 또한 작품이 가지는 표현방식의 확장과 진화를 제시하는 동시에 예술이 기술을 서정적으로 바꾸고 감정을 입히는 과정을 서술하고 있다.
이번 전시 <to my birthday>는 생일을 주제로 한 사진시리즈를 선보인다. 장성은 작가는 일반적으로 연상되는 생일의 행복한 풍경(순간)이 아닌 그 이면의 풍경과 나머지의 시간들, 즉 생일이라는 특별한 하루에 대한 생경한 이미지를 표현하고자 했다. 일반적으로 특정 단어에 대해 각인된 이미지들은 사람들의 생각을 얽매이게 하고 때로는 종속되기도 한다는 점에서 작가는 ‘행복한’ 이란 형용사를 붙이곤 하는 생일은 이 단어로 인해 행복을 강조하고 강요받는 느낌을 받는다고 말한다. 작가는 생일날이 되면 작게나마 기대라는 걸 하게 된 바람에 아주 쉽게 서글픈 생일을 보냈던 기억을 상기했고, 깜짝 파티, 뜻밖에 선물 등 관련 단어를 생각해보면 여느 일상과 다른 예민한 자신을 마주하면서 자신의 감정이 다른 날들과는 사뭇 다르다는 것을 직시한곤 했던 것이다.
작품 <Wild fluctuation>, <Gentle fluctuation>, <Nonchalant> 등의 시리즈는 생일 하루 동안 펼쳐지는 감정의 기복들을 표현한다. 또한 케이크에 초가 켜지고 사람들이 노래를 시작할 때 기분을 표현한 <Nude apple>은 생일이면 겪게 되는 민망함을 시각적으로 드러내고 있다. 이번 시리즈의 대표작인 <Wounded cake>은 생일에 대한 복잡 미묘한 감정을 시도한 작품이다. 장성은은 생일에 대한 여러 종류의 감정, 즉 조용한 생일, 적당히 기쁜 생일일 수도 있고 지긋지긋한 생일일 수도 있는 생일의 모든 감정이 소중하고 가치가 있음을 전하고 있다.
Chang Sungeun, who has been dealing with photo media, will hold an solo exhibition <to my birthday> from October 19th to November 7th, 2022 at Space Willing N Dealing. This artist has consistently expressed the visual implementation of invisible individual emotions. In addition, she has continued to be interested in space and media as online that can replace material art. The exhibition, a project to select “2022 ARKO ART & Tech” support project, will hold both actual and virtual exhibitions at the same time to show the artist's perspective on physical and invisible materials. It also presents the expansion and evolution of the expression method of the work, while describing the process by which art lyrically changes technology and adds emotion.
This exhibition <to my birthday> presents a series of birthday-themed photographs. Chang Sungeun tried to express the scenery behind it and remaining time behind the bizarre image of a special day, not the happy scenery (moment) of birthday, which is generally reminiscent. In general, the artist says that birthdays, which often attach the adjective "happy" in that the image imprinted on a specific word constrains people's thoughts and is sometimes subordinated, emphasize happiness and feel compelled by the word “Happy Birthday“. The artist recalled a bad memory of having a sad birthday because of some expectations during her birthday, and when she thinks of related words such as surprise parties and unexpected gifts, she faces a sensitive self that is different from any other day.
Series such as "Wild Fluctuation", "Gentle Fluctuation", and "Nonchalant" expresses the ups and downs of emotions experienced during the day of the birthday. "Nude Apple," which expresses the feelings when candles are lit on the cake and start singing, visually reveals the embarrassment experienced on the birthday. “Wounded cake“ is the main work that attempts to reveal complex and subtle feelings about birthdays. Chang Sungeun conveys that all kinds of emotions about birthdays, such as quiet birthdays, boring birthday, etc. are precious and valuable.
