강석호는 기존에 신체의 일부분을 확대하여 옷의 질감이나 색상, 형태 그 자체에 주목하는 연작을 선보인 바 있다. 전체가 아닌 부분으로 대상을 표현하며 그 안에서 형식적인 아름다움을 부각시켰다. 2017년 페리지갤러리에서 개최한 <the other>에서는 얼굴을 맞대고 있는 두 사람의 한쪽 눈을 그린 시리즈를 전시하면서 인물의 얼굴 형태를 통해 기존에는 주목하지 않았던 대상의 감정을 일부 담아내며, 동시에 캔버스 안의 눈은 관객을 바라보는 것처럼 보이기도 했다. 강석호는 이번 전시 <untitled>에서 낮의 달에 대한 심상을 평면 위에 옮긴다. 그리고 발표되지 않은 몇개의 드로잉과 지속적으로 관심을 가지고 작업을 진행하는 색채 작업도 동시에 선보일 예정이다. 그에게 있어 회화는 그가 살고 있는 방식 그 자체이다. 그의 작품은 누군가에게 말을 걸기 위한 시도이면서도 동시에 독백이기도 하다.
이처럼 개인전을 준비할 때 마다 미묘하게 달라지는 표현방식의 차이는 작가가 평면 속에서 보여지는 이야기가 무엇으로 구성되는지에 대해 꾸준히 탐구하고 있는 태도를 반영하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 또 한편 강석호 작가가 추상적인 사고와 추상적인 표현의 경계 속 어딘가에 위치한 자신의 작업 형식을 찾는 과정이기도 한데, 이번 전시에서 드러나는 이미지가 구상적 대상을 기반으로 그려지지만 이것이 드러내는 개념 자체를 추상화된 의미로서 받아들일 수 있는 근거가 되기도 하다.
강석호 작가의 전시에는 '반복'되는 이미지가 늘 있어왔다. 그려진 이미지 자체가 또 다른 작품의 레퍼런스가 되기도 하며 반복을 통하여 회화의 본질을 드러낼 수 있는 형식적 장치로 사용해왔다. 이를 통하여 같은 이미지라도 화면마다 다르게 그려지게 되는 회화의 원작성을 드러낼 수 있는데, 작가가 지속적으로 연구하고 있는 ‘그림’에 대한 탐구 방법 중 하나이다. 이번 전시에서 마찬가지로 전시 전반에 걸쳐 반복적 요소가 드러나고 있으며, 이는 작가가 전시를 구성하는 공간 속에서 하나의 주제 혹은 전시별 특징을 한데 묶을 수 있는 작가 나름의 방법론이기도 하다.
강석호는 1971년 출생으로, 서울대 조소과와 독일 쿤스트 아카데미 뒤셀도르프를 졸업했다. 금호미술관(2006), 갤러리2(2009), 미메시스아트뮤지엄(2015), 페리지갤러리(2017) 등에서 개인전을 개최했다.
seok ho kang has presented a series of works that focus on the texture, color, and form itself of the clothes by enlarging specific part of the body. It expresses the object as a part, not the whole, and the formal beauty is emphasized in it. In the solo exhibition titled <the other> which was held at the Perigee Gallery in 2017, a series of faces of two person facing each other was introduced. Compared to previous paintings which never included facial expressions, new series depicted facial characteristics and emotional status of the model he portrayed, and the eyes in the canvas seems to stare at the audience. seok ho kang’s solo exhibition which takes place in Space: Willing N Dealing from 8th to 28th of February is titled <Untitled>. New series of works which is inspired by the moon’s existence during the daytime, a few undisclosed drawings, and color field works which he continually worked on are on display. For kang, painting is the way of his life itself. He attempts to talk to someone anonymous with his painting, but often it ends as a monologue.
Whenever kang has his solo exhibition, ways of expression in his paintings slightly differ each time. It reflects the fact that kang constantly explores and studies how to compose on the plane. In this process, kang also seeks for his formal visual language which is located in the boundary between abstract thought and abstract expression. His paintings are based on the concrete object but is also on the grounds to understand concept itself as abstract meaning.
Repetition of images is one of the key concepts in seok ho kang's exhibition. The depicted image itself often became a reference for another work. Through repetition, kang intends to reveal the essence of painting. By depicting similar image repetitively, each painting is different in many ways and this reminds the viewer of the painting’s originality. This is one way of studying painting for him. In this exhibition, one can discover repetitive characteristic. This style of duplicating images is also the methodology of constructing exhibition spaces.
Born in 1971, seok ho kang graduated from Seoul National University and Kunst Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany. He held a number of solo exhibitions at Kumho Museum of Art(2006), Gallery 2(2009), Mimesis Art Museum(2015), and Perigee Gallery(2017).
