전시소개
스페이스 윌링앤딜링은 2025년 8월 30일부터 9월 21일까지 김허앵 작가의 개인전 <Dear morning>을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2023년 개인전 <나의 지구를 지켜줘>에서 암울한 미래를 상상하며, 자신과는 다른 시각으로 미래를 바라보는 딸의 모습을 투영했던 작업에 이어, 작가가 또 다른 방향을 모색하는 과정을 선보인다.
전시 제목 <Dear morning>은 어두운 밤을 지나 맞이한 아침에 건네는 인사로, 작가가 기대하는 새로운 희망의 서사를 담고 있다. 산으로 둘러쌓인 거주 공간은 갑작스럽게 마주하는 벌레들이 일상 다반사다. 이들이 익충임을 알게 된 작가는 이들과의 공생을 결심하 후 자신의 그림 속 주인공으로 그려낸다. 혐오스러웠던 벌레들은 동화 속 의인화된 귀여운 캐릭터로 변모했고, 막연하게 지속되고 있었던 불안한 미래에 대한 감정은 게임의 레벨을 하나씩 정복하며 성취를 쌓아가는 우직한 ’바위’ 캐릭터들로 구현되었다. 이들의 여정은 위기와 불안을 도전의 무대로 전환하는 상상력으로서 제시되었다.
김허앵은 딸을 둔 엄마로서, 인간적 감성과 윤리적 정서가 황폐해져 가는 사회, 그리고 문명의 편리함이 초래한 환경 파괴와 기후 위기 속에서 다음 세대의 에너지와 이미 존재하는 것들과의 공존 가능성을 모색한다. 이번 전시는 이러한 불안과 위기를 긍정과 희망의 회로로 변환하려는 작가의 시선을 담았다. 작품은 크고 경쾌한 붓질로 물감의 질감을 담대하게 표현하며, 김허앵 특유의 유머와 동화적 상상력이 화면 위에 펼쳐진다. 전시 공간은 마치 동화 속 무대처럼 화사하고 발랄한 색채로 가득 채워질 예정이다.

Dear morning
모두가 잠이 든 밤이 되면 나는 슬쩍 내일 아침을 생각한다. 무엇을 아침으로 먹을지, 몇 시쯤 집에서 나가야 할지 등. 조용히 오르내리는 아이의 배를 한번 들여다보는 것을 마지막으로 집안의 모든 불을 끈다.
미래에 대해서 상상하는 것은 나의 오래된 습관이다. 아주 오랜 시간동안 나는 폐허와 같은 풍경만 생각해왔다. 개인이 해결할 수 없는 여러 이유들로 부서지고 망가진 어두운 세계를. 거대한 위기 앞에서 무력한 개인으로 침몰하는 이의 모습을 떠올렸다.
거의 이십 하고도 몇 년 만에 드디어, 나는 이런 어두침침한 미래를 생각하는 것에 흥미를 잃었다. 특별한 계기가 있다기 보단 그냥 자연스럽게 그렇게 된 것 같다. 끊임없는 것들과 변하지 않는 것들 사이에서 또 조금씩 변화하고, 그 자리에 있는 듯하면서 머무르지 않는 어떤 순간들을 겪으면서 스르륵 하고.
작가소개
김허앵 (1989년생)은 홍익대학교 회화과 학사 졸업, 동대학원 회화과 석사 졸업했다. 2023년 <나의 지구를 지켜줘> 스페이스 윌링앤딜링, 2022년 <Furry ways> 미학관, 2021년 <먹고 마시고: 사랑하지만 역겨운 나에게> 인스턴트 루프, 2020년 <mama do> Keep in Touch 등 개인전을 가졌다. 2024년 눈 컨템포러리, 2023년 서울연극센터, 2022년 스페이스 윌링앤딜링, 2021년 수원시립미술관, 교보문고 광화문점 등 그룹전에 참여했다.
After the Night, Greet the Morning: Discover the Humor and Imagination of Kim Heoang
Space Willing N Dealing is presenting Dear Morning, a solo exhibition by artist Kim Heoang, from August 30 to September 21, 2025. Following her 2023 solo exhibition Save My Earth, which imagined a bleak future while projecting onto it the perspective of her daughter—who envisions the future differently from herself—this new exhibition reveals the artist’s pursuit of another direction. The title Dear Morning refers to a greeting offered to the morning after a long, dark night, embodying the artist’s narrative of renewed hope. Living in a home surrounded by mountains, the artist frequently encounters unexpected insects as part of her daily life. Upon learning that many of these are beneficial species, she resolved to coexist with them, reimagining them as main characters in her paintings. Once perceived with aversion, these insects are transformed into charming, anthropomorphic figures. Meanwhile, the vague sense of anxiety about the future takes the form of steadfast “rock” characters who advance by conquering game levels, gradually achieving a sense of accomplishment. Their journey is presented as an imaginative transformation of crisis and anxiety into a stage for challenge. As a mother, Kim reflects on a world where human sensitivity and ethical sensibilities are eroding, and where the conveniences of civilization bring environmental destruction and climate crisis. She seeks the possibility of coexistence between the energy of the next generation and the beings that already inhabit the world. Dear Morning embodies her intention to convert these anxieties and crises into circuits of positivity and hope. Through bold, dynamic brushstrokes, Kim captures the tactile qualities of paint, while her signature humor and fairy-tale imagination unfold across the canvas. The exhibition space will be filled with vibrant, lively colors, like a stage set for her whimsical characters.
