For the artist Kwon HyeSeong, who merges Western and East Asian painting styles, everyday landscapes serve as the starting point for her artwork. Central to her artistic expression is the use of 'line' as a pictorial element. The artist employs lines to capture the energy emanating from scenes or situations that leave a strong impression on her subjective viewpoint. As a result, the themes and forms are clearly combined to make the line-filled canvas look like a complete abstraction, but it is also a screen where there is a clear object. In this exhibition, the artist selects landscapes of wind-swept grasslands as her focus. The freely drawn lines, akin to the swaying grass, cascade across the canvas, creating a spectacle reminiscent of nature's playful dance.
In March 2024, the solo exhibition "People Without Umbrellas" at Space Willing N Dealing presents Kwon HyeSeong's oil paintings for the first time. Although the artist initially pursued Western painting during college, she has since delved into the world of oriental lines, black ink, paper absorption, and the dynamic rhythms of nature, adopting the form of Eastern painting. In her previous work, such as "Back Beat!", water and wind (depicted through swaying branches and leaves) were expressed in the style of Eastern painting. During this period, the artist remarked, "How can I convey the myriad impressions that have touched my being?" This fixation led her to explore the rich potential of black tones, evident in the screens featured in the exhibition, which aim to juxtapose the diversity and depth of black hues with the artist's interpretation of water and wind.
All the screens showcased in this exhibition depict scenes captured by the artist as she walked among the grass. Initially, the artist followed her usual process of creating screens with black lines, but gradually began to incorporate colors. Over time, she transitioned to using oil paints, ultimately covering the entire screen with vibrant hues and textures. Rather than simply reproducing the grass she encountered, the screens adorned with lines of various colors seem to express the energy pulsating within the environment. This energy mirrors the resilience and adaptability of the grass as it sways and withstands the wind. The scene captured in the artwork represents a fleeting moment in a constantly changing and evolving landscape. As noted by the artist, this perpetual transformation resonates with the continuous changes experienced within the body, where each movement brings forth a different sensation and experience. By intertwining the environment with embodied experiences, the artist's paintings exemplify Kwon HyeSeong's distinctive pictorial approach, which transcends the material realm to explore the depths of the human psyche.
