전시소개
스페이스 윌링앤딜링에서는 4월 30일부터 5월 21일까지 이정형 작가의 개인전 <fine works>가 개최된다. 작가는 이번 전시에서 노동이 만들어내는 아름다움과 예술 작품이 주는 아름다움의 관계성을 다룬다. 전시공간 속에서의 ‘작가업’과 공사현장 속에서의 ‘설치업’이라는 두 직업 사이의 갈등과 괴리감을 느끼게 된 작가는 이러한 갈등을 해소하기 위해 삶과 예술이 중첩된 상황을 만들어낸다. 작가는 현장에서 생겨나는 비효율적 행위나 우연의 과정들을 사진으로 기록하거나 현장의 부산물들을 수집한다. 이렇게 모인 이미지 중 일부를 선택하여 전시 공간에 재현함으로써 ‘비 예술’과 ‘의미’사이의 ‘미적 결과물’을 제시한다. 생업의 현장에서 발생하는 비효율적 행위나 우연의 과정들은 결코 바람직한 것이 아니다. 철저히 계획적이고 효율적이어야 할 공사현장에서 어쩔 수 없이 발생되는 이 불미스러운 사건들은 작가에게 곤혹스러운 일인 동시에 예술의 시작점이 된다. 공사현장에서 가치 없는 부산물들이 생겨나거나 효용을 다해 쓸모 없는 것이 되는 순간, 그것은 작업의 재료로서 새로운 생명을 갖는다.
이러한 작업의 과정은 작가에게 예술과 생업 사이에서의 갈등을 삶의 원동력으로 바꾸게끔 하는 힘이 된다고 말한다. 이렇게 삶과 예술의 중첩이라는 큰 범주를 다루면서도 이정형 작가는 너무 무겁거나 진지하기보다는 담담함과 위트를 통해 비예술과 예술의 경계를 와해시키며 작가만의 영역을 만들어 나간다.
나는 지난 수년간 미술관, 전시장에서 공간을 기획하고 공사하는 일을 해왔다. 이런 일들을 하면 할수록 나는 작품과 전시공간 그리고 ‘작가업’과 ‘설치업’이라는 직업 사이의 갈등과 괴리감을 경험했다. 이러한 갈등과 괴리가 주는 모호한 지점이 나에게는 작업에 대한 새로운 관점을 찾아내는 계기가 되었다. 이는 설치 과정에서 벌어지는 노동이 만들어내는 아름다움과 예술작품이 주는 아름다움이 일련의 관계성을 가지고 있다는 것이다. - 작가노트 中
Space: Willing N Dealing presents solo exhibition of Chunghyung Lee, <fine works> from April 30th to May 21st. Lee deals with the relationship between the beauty created by installation related labor and the actual art works in this exhibition. As Lee discovered conflict and divergence between the 'artist’s work' and the 'installation work' in the exhibition space, he creates a situation where life and art overlap. Lee takes photograph of the ineffective acts or coincidental process at the construction site or collects objects from the site. Some of these images are selected and represented in the exhibition space to present 'aesthetic output' between 'non-art' and 'meaning'. Inefficient acts or coincidental process that arise in the construction site are never desirable. Although all processes in the construction site must be thoroughly planned and efficient, unexpected incidents are unavoidable. Inefficient process is annoying to installation workers, but at the sametime, to Lee, it is a starting point of art. At the moment when unprofitable byproducts arise in the construction site or become utterly useless, it has a new life as a material of art work.
Through this process, this confusing moments between art and real life becomes strong motive for his artistic experiments. Even though Lee deals with the big category of overlapping life and art, he breaks up the boundaries between non-art and art with sense of humor.
I have been designing spaces and constructing in galleries and exhibition halls for the past several years. The more I construct within art spaces the more I experience the conflicts and gaps between the art works and the exhibition space, being professional 'artist' and 'installation worker'. The ambiguity of these conflicts and divergences gave me a chance to find new perspectives on my work. I found out that the beauty created by the actual labor and the beauty of the actual art works in the installation process has a close relationships.
