스페이스 윌링앤딜링에서는 2017년 9월 5일부터 9월 30일까지 박용석 작가의 개인전 <당신의 기대(What is your perspective?)>를 진행한다. 작가 박용석은 도시 곳곳에서 직접 발견할 수 있는 일상적인 풍경에서 영감을 얻어 개인과 사회의 관계를 새로이 조명하는 다양한 개념미술 프로젝트를 지속해 왔다. 끊임없이 개발을 거듭하는 도시의 모습, 그 안에서 살아가는 다양한 인간상, 미술이라는 이름으로 공공의 영역에 침투한 공공미술의 의미 등은 지금까지 그가 집중해 온 주제이다. 작가는 프로젝트 내용 전달에 적합한 매체를 프로젝트에 맞춰 선택하여 활용하는데, 최근까지 재건축의 현장의 모습과 변화의 과정을 담기 위해 비디오 작업을 중점적으로 선보인 바 있다.
Space Willing N Dealing is pleased to present Yong-seok Park's solo exhibition What's your perspective from the 5th until the 30th of September. Yong-seok Park is inspired by cityscape we all confront everyday and explore relationship between an individual and society. The city we all live in is constantly going under various development process. Park is interested mainly on public art projects within the boundary of the city and residues of city development enterprise. He is well-known for selecting appropriate medium for each project. Since recent projects deal with reconstruction process in the city, he concentrated on video works.
작품소개
이번 전시에서 박용석 작가는 직접 경험한 사건을 가공하여 대상의 일부를 지우고 흩트려 제시한다. <소녀상>은 4년 여의 시간 동안 작가가 동일한 장소에서 일주일에 한 번씩 촬영한 것을 모은 영상 작품이다. 이 조형물이 공공성을 어떻게 획득하게 되는지에 대한 궁금증에서 시작된 작업으로, 자연스럽게 조형물을 둘러싼 여러 집단의 태도, 그리고 슬픔, 분노, 반성과 같은 다양한 시민들의 반응을 확인할 수 있었고, 관객은 특정한 이슈를 대하는 사회적 흐름의 변화 과정을 목격할 수 있다. <소녀상>에서 진짜 소녀상은 지워지고, 이를 둘러싼 이야기들을 대면하게 된다.
<식물들: 자카르타 모노레일 103>은 인도네시아의 수도 자카르타 길거리에 놓여있는 정체불명의 조형물을 박수 소리에 맞춰 보여주는 작품이다. 언뜻 식물처럼 보이기도 하는 이 조형물은 지난 10 년 동안 공사 중단 상태에 놓인 모노레일 기둥 103 개다. 교통난을 해결하기 위해 건설이 시작된 이 모노레일은 IMF 와 건설사의 부도가 겹치면서 오랜 시간 흉물로 방치되고 있다. 이 작품은 일반적으로 영상 작업에서 중요하게 여겨지는 스토리텔링, 각본, 콘티보다 음악적 컨셉트를 우선적으로 결정하고 제작됐다. 한옥미 작곡가가 제작한 박수 소리로 이루어진 음악을 중심으로 103 개의 기둥을 다양한 방식으로 나열하며 이야기를 전개한다. 작가는 시각적, 청각적 효과를 덧입혀 현실을 낯설게 만듦으로써 관객으로 하여금 지금 우리가 처한 현실의 모습을 다시 한 번 숙고해보게 한다.
Park's works are based on his personal experience. He has visited public sculpture Monument to Comfort Women once every week for last four years. he recorded film everytime he visited. Some parts of the film has been eliminated or modified. The reason he started this project is because of his curiosity. He questioned how this sculpture could have public concern. While observing this sculpture, he could find out how groups with various interests react to this piece. Some showed sorrow, anger, or self-reflection. Audience could witness change in public's awareness of specific issue. In Monument to Comfort Women, real monument is eliminated but one can face various opinions around it.
The Plants: Jakarta Monorail 103 is a video which shows unidentified environmental sculpture in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. These sculptures are in fact 103 pillars of a monorail which has been suspended for last ten years. This monorail was aimed to solve heavy traffic jam, however, bankruptcy of construction company and IMF led current situation. For Park, concept in music took priority over storytelling, or scenario in this piece. Han Okmi, renowned composer wrote music for park's work. It was comprised of various sound of hand clapping with beat. With visual and sound effect, Park successfully defamiliarized the reality so that audience can contemplate upon current situation.

가치는 사전적 의미로 인간이 대상과의 관계에서 만들어지는 중요성을 말한다. 그리고 이것은 사회적 통념과 규범을 만드는 기준이 된다. 하지만 가치는 고정된 것이 아닌 계층, 단체, 시대 등에 따라 다르게 판단되는 성질을 가지고 있어서 효과적인 통제를 필요로 하는 권위적인 사회일수록 이것을 개인의 판단이 아닌 관습으로 받아들이도록 훈육하거나 조작한다. 사실 그보다 안 좋은 경우는 개인의 가치를 망각하도록 방치하는 사회이다.
<당신의 기대(What is your perspective?)>는 내가 최근에 경험한 사건들을 가공하였다. 하지만 이것들은 나의 입장을 주장하기 위해서가 아니라 관객에게 질문하기 위한 기록이었다. 작품의 특징은 대상의 일부를 “지우기”와 “흩트리기”라는 방식을 사용하는데 (이미지가 약간 혼란스럽지만, 무엇인지 모를 정도는 아니다.)관객이 이 이미지들을 이해하려면 각자의 문법을 사용해야 한다. 이 “각자의 문법”이 자신의 “가치”이며, 이것을 끄집어내는 것이 이번 전시의 목적이다. 그래서 작품은 관객의 입장에 따라 다르게 보이는 것이 당연하다. 또한 한 때 이해되었던 작품일지라도 어떤 상황에 따라 다르게 해석할 수도 있다. “당신의 기대”가 절대 변하지 않은 것은 아니니까.
In the dictionary, value means the quality that renders something desirable or valuable which evolves between men and the object. And this becomes one of the standards in social norms. These values differ by class, group, time. In authoritarian society, these values are strongly controlled so that each individual cannot follow their own decision.
<What is your perspective?> is an exhibition shows my current works which several modifications were made based on my experiences. I did modified some part of the video not to pressure my personal opinion this matter but to ask question to the audience. By eliminating and scattering some part, audience is asked to use their "own grammar" in order to understand what it is. Their “own grammar” is their own "value", and to take out these values are the main purpose of this exhibition. It is natural that each viewer will interpret this work differently. One viewer can interpret it in different way depending on the situation you are in. One can never be so sure that “Your expectation” will remain unchanged.
